clowning around.

Ans. The narrator says that the elderly couple was a divine
help for her and her family because they came in time and
helped them hide in their house before the men came in.
Yes,there was a possibility of the couple not helping the
narrator’s family in the circumstances.They could have been
sleeping and not heard them from the other side.They could
not have wanted to get involved in any trouble too.
